WELCOME TO the:
freshwater aquaculture center
Do fish pique your interest? Ever thought about how your seafood is cultivated? Well, let’s meet Tilly for all of that information! Tilly, being a Tilapia, speaks in a language we don’t quite understand! Bubbles and blues are his way to go! But no worries! He’s the most understanding and chill guy you will ever meet, and Kammy will help us with the translation! His favorite motto is “🫧🫧🫧🐟🐟🫧🐟🫧” which Kammy says means “Just keep swimming”. His favorite movie must be Finding Nemo. But anyway! Let’s head over to Tilly’s home, the Freshwater Aquaculture Center!
The Freshwater Aquaculture Center is the research and development unit for aquaculture, and they offer a guided tour of their facilities, which they use for breeding and production. Here, they have lots of tilapia, catfish, and even ornamental fishes! You get to learn about proper site selection, breeding processes, and even water management. There’s even an opportunity to feed the fish, among other hands-on experiences, if you are willing to get a little slimy and wet.
Tours are held by faculty at the College of Fisheries, so you know that extensive information about all things fish is just at arm’s reach! The place is HUGE, so you’d best come well-hydrated and sun-protected, as almost all of the tanks are outside under the sun. Fish tanks of all sizes can be viewed! Kammy himself was amazed to see how big all the fishes could get, and he even got a chance to feed and hold the Tilapia
You should also check out the Living Fish Museum at the College of Fisheries Freshwater Aquaculture Center. The museum houses the different collections of indigenous and tropical freshwater fishes, ornamental freshwater fishes, reptiles, mollusks, crustaceans, and aquatic plants from different provinces in Luzon.
